5: The Lion, Judah and the East. |
How interested were the ancient Hebrews in Astronomy? One idea is to try to trace the origin of star names and constellations. When this is done, it is discovered that a surprising number do seem to be Hebrew in origin. I can only give a few examples. 'Kochab' in the Little Bear is THE name for star in Hebrew, pronounced 'Ko-kawb. In ancient times it would been the Pole Star. Also it will be mentioned elsewhere that 'Pegasus' - is a Greek winged horse, yet 'Peha', is the Hebrew for Chief and 'soos' is the Hebrew for horse. I am not claiming that all or even most of the names found today have their origins in Hebrew, but many do. |
